Silene regia is a showy native wildflower with tall spikes of royal red flowers. It's a marvelous magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies. The common name, Royal Catchfly, refers to the sticky sap on the back part of the flower, which may trap small flies and gnats.
Silene regia is native to the midwestern and southeastern United States where it is endangered due to habitat loss. Hardy perennial in zones 4-9.
