Centranthus ruber is a long-blooming perennial with masses of reddish-pink or white flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. Hardy in zones 4-9.

Sowing Centranthus ruber Seeds

Start centranthus seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Or sow outdoors in late spring. Barely cover the seeds with soil. Full sun to part shade.


Centranthus ruber 'Coccineus' is a first-year flowering perennial. It repeat blooms if the stems are cut back by one-third after flowering. The clusters of reddish-pink flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

Also known as Red Valerian, Jupiter's Beard, Keys of Heaven, and Centranthus ruber var. coccineus. It tolerates drought, shade, and poor soil.
