Rattlesnake bean has 7" long, dark green pods streaked with purple. The flavor is excellent. The light buff seeds are mottled with dark brown like a rattlesnake skin. The 10' vines are vigorous and drought tolerant. Good soup bean.

Sowing Pole Bean Seeds

Sow outdoors 2 weeks after the last frost date when the soil is warm. Sow 1" deep and 3" apart. Provide a tall trellis or stakes. Full sun. Phaseolus vulgaris.

Cherokee Trail of Tears produces 6" long, green beans with a purplish tint. The shiny, black seeds are good for soup. Saved by Dr. John Wyche, whose Cherokee ancestors brought this bean with them on the Trail of Tears in 1838.

Christmas Lima bean has large seeds - about the size of a quarter - that are cream mottled with bright red. These delicious lima beans have a buttery flavor. Good for fresh eating, canning and freezing.
