If you want a plant that none of your gardening friends has, try Dianthus carthusianorum (if you can pronounce it). This tall perennial blooms in June and July with clusters of cool pink flowers that attract butterflies.
In Color in the Garden, Nori and Sandra Pope suggest planting Dianthus carthusianorum with Linaria 'Canon J. Went' and Digitalis purpurea. It's also nice with Digitalis lutea and Nigella damascena. It's shown here poking through the foliage of a rose. Hardy in zones 5-9.
