Baptisia australis is a native perennial. The large, bushy plants are topped with spikes of blue, pea-like flowers that bloom in late spring. The blue-green foliage is dense, giving the plant a shrub-like appearance. It remains attractive throughout the season, making a nice backdrop for other flowers in the garden.

Baptisia australis is an important host plant for many butterfly species, including Clouded Sulphur, Orange Sulphur, Eastern Tailed-Blue, Frosted Elfin, Hoary Edge, and Wild Indigo Duskywing.

Baptisia australis is long-lived, drought tolerant and deer resistant. It doesn't transplant well, so it's best grown from seed and transplanted as seedlings. Also known as Blue Wild Indigo and Blue False Indigo. Hardy in zones 3-8.
