Leek 'American Flag'

American Flag is a high-quality leek that produces tender, long, white stalks. The stalks are about 2" thick, and they have a mild flavor. It is slow to bolt and winter hardy.

Leek is a member of the onion family, which Anthony William refers to as "nature's antibiotics."

American Flag leek originated in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was known as Giant Musselburgh in the 1830s. Around 1870, it became known as Scottish Flag or American Flag because of the fan shape of its leaves and its ability to overwinter in cold areas of North America.

Sowing Leek Seeds

Sow leek seeds outdoors 4 weeks before the last frost date, 1/4" deep and 2" apart in 6" deep trenches. Thin to 4" apart. Gradually fill in the trenches as the leeks grow. Or start indoors 6 weeks before the last frost date. Separate the seedlings and transplant outside after the last frost. Full sun.
