Eryngium alpinum 'Blue Star' blooms from midsummer to early fall with cone-shaped, metallic blue flowers surrounded by soft, feathery bracts. It makes a good companion plant for ornamental grasses and other perennials. The flowers attract butterflies. Eryngium 'Blue Star' is stunning in the garden, and it is wonderful for cutting. It was bred for the cut flower industry. Eryngium alpinum is a long-lived perennial, native to the Balkans. Blue Star was introduced by Jelitto Perennial Seeds in 1974. It is drought tolerant and deer resistant. Hardy in zones 4-9.

Eryngium alpinum needs fluctuating temperatures to germinate. Sow outdoors in the fall. To start indoors, give 3 weeks at room temperature, followed by 5 weeks in the fridge. Barely cover the seeds with soil. Full sun. Well-drained soil.
