Hoary vervain has spikes of lavender-purple flowers in July and August. This native wildflower attracts bees and butterflies. Songbirds eat the seeds.
Verbena stricta blooms the first year from seed. It is drought-tolerant, preferring well-drained soil. It makes a terrific companion plant for lilies, blooming at the same time.
Deadhead the spent flower spikes, unless it's planted in a wild prairie garden. Like other verbenas, it can be an invasive self-sower. Hardy in zones 3-9.
