Topaz tomato is a heavy producer of 1-3 ounce fruits that are yellow with green and gold speckles. My mom enjoys selling this unique tomato at the farmers market. The fruits are crack-resistant and pretty as can be.
The skin is a bit tough (that would explain its crack resistance), and the texture is on the mushy side. However, the flavor is pleasant, mildly sweet and tangy. When the fruits are fully ripe, they develop a fascinating translucent look.
Tomato 'Topaz' comes from China, where it is called Huan U. Try it with its companion, Violet Jasper.
Sowing Topaz Tomato Seeds:
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow 1/8" deep. Place the pots in a warm spot to speed germination. The most common causes of poor germination are cold temperatures and burying the seeds too deeply.
Transplant outside when all danger of frost is past. Bury the stem up to the first set of true leaves (tomatoes root along the stem). Full sun. Spacing 30-36". Provide a large tomato cage for support.
