Tomato 'Mortgage Lifter'
Heirloom Tomato 'Mortgage Lifter'

This tomato is famous not only for its good looks and great taste, but also for its story.

In the 1940's, a man in West Virginia named Charlie Byles, nicknamed Radiator Charlie, developed this lovely tomato by crossing other large-fruited varieties. He sold the resulting plants for $1 each and paid off his $6,000 mortgage in six years.

Mortgage Lifter is a moderate to high producer of reddish-pink beefsteaks that weigh about one pound. The flavor is mild and balanced.
