Blessed Milk Thistle, Mary's Thistle
(Silybum marianum)
Milk thistle is a spectacular herb with mottled, green and white leaves and tall stems topped with purple flowers that attract butterflies.
Silybum marianum is a biennial in zones 5-9. In colder areas, it can be grown as an annual for its striking foliage.
Milk thistle seeds contain silymarin, which is used to rejuvenate damaged liver cells and counteract some types of poisoning. All parts of the plant are edible, but the leaves are spiny.
