White Clary Sage, Muscatel Sage
(Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica alba)
White clary sage is a biennial that produces large, bumpy green leaves the first year, then puts up tall spikes of greenish-white bracts the second year. The whole plant has a strong citrus-sage fragrance.
Salvia sclarea is impressive at the back of the border or against a fence or wall. It makes an excellent backdrop for other flowers.
The seeds of Salvia sclarea were once used to make an eye rinse, giving it the common name of "clear eye sage". Hardy in zones 4-9.
