Howden is the most widely grown pumpkin in the United States. It is popular for its excellent Jack-O-Lantern shape. The deep orange, ribbed fruits weigh 20 to 30 pounds, slightly larger than a basketball, and are somewhat egg-shaped with a flattened bottom and a hard skin that keeps them from growing lopsided.
Howden pumpkin was developed in the early 1970s by John Howden of Sheffield, MA. It's a good variety for pies.
