Knautia macedonica - Crimson Scabious
Knautia is a lovely and versatile perennial. It has gray-green leaves and tall, wiry stems of pincushion-style flowers in a deep shade of purplish-red. The flowers attract butterflies.
Knautia macedonica blooms from late spring to fall. It makes a nice filler between large shrubs and ornamental grasses. The plants grow thickly, forming a spreading patch that keeps down weeds.
Also known as Macedonian Scabious. Deer resistant. Hardy in zones 5-10.
Sowing Knautia macedonica Seeds:
Sow indoors in early spring. Barely cover the seeds, then refrigerate for 3 weeks. Slow to germinate. Full sun. Self sows. Spacing 18".
