Hyacinth Bean
(Lablab purpureus, Dolichos lablab)
This tropical vine has purple and pink flowers followed by leathery, purple seed pods. Eating the beans is not recommended, but the lovely vines are nice for covering fences and trellises.
Hyacinth bean is an heirloom flower, introduced from Egypt in the early nineteenth century. It's especially nice combined with other annual vines like morning glory. Hardy in zones 10-11.
