Helianthus annuus
Common Sunflower, Wild Sunflower
(Helianthus annuus)

Here in Utah, wild sunflowers bloom along the sides of country roads, cheering up travelers with their bright yellow blooms. Sunflowers are great for attracting birds and beneficial insects.

Wild sunflowers are virtually carefree, tolerating heat, drought and poor soil. They bloom all summer long. I personally like them better than the modern hybrids because they're smaller and more graceful looking.

Sowing Helianthus annuus seeds:
Wild sunflowers can be slow to germinate, and they benefit from cold-moist stratification. Sow outdoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost date. Sow in fall in mild winter areas. Or sow indoors, then refrigerate 3 weeks. For more information, see Helianthus Seeds.
